“Ioannis” is a ten-meter-long traditional wooden Liberty caique, build in the island of Crete and bought by Yiannis 6 years ago. This is a new breed boat, an evolution of the Hydraiki, essentially a small karavoskaro with a rounded stern, which is built using traditional methods without lofting. Small boatyards still use to this day traditional methods. Patterns are handed down through the generations and are used to shape stems, sternposts (or transoms), and principal frames, after which ribbands are installed to refine the final hull shape. Some of these techniques date at least from early classical times, according to Maritime historian Dr. Kostas Damianidis.

It took captain Yiannis 2 days of non-stop sailing to bring it back to Hydra. This is his third caique in a row and the larger one. This boat can sail in high seas and fish far beyond Hydra’s waters. Ask the Captain to share his many adventures of long expeditions for big fish!
